Wanted to be a war journalist: Minisha Lamba

Bollywood actress Minisha Lambha on Thursday (28 July, 2011) visited Kolkata to promote the new entertainment channel from UTV group called UTV STARS. IBNS correspondent Arnab Chakraborty caught up with her after the event for an informal chat.
Minissha Lamba, journalist

How do you feel about UTV STARS?

I think it's going to be great. I think we are going to come a lot closer to the people. Our lives are not really that extraordinary so half the things we tell to the press a made up. I think people are going to know about our really boring lives. I believe they will get to know us better.

Do you think there will be privacy issues?

Well our media still has a lot of respect for privacy and there is a great ethic code still present. Compared to the west we have a lot more privacy. So I don't think there'll be any such problem.

Recently you are part of Bheja Fry 2 and the film didn't do so well in the box office. Why do you think that it was so?

Why do you say that? The film made money and the producer is ‘malamal’ (very rich) right now. He's yet to take me out to dinner as a treat.

Still what was the problem with the movie? It didn't attract a cult following like Bheja Fry.

I guess we are used to a lot of cult movies right now and when Bheja Fry came out it was a comedy and everybody was amazed by how it was shot in one room. Today for a film to become a cult film you need for it to be more than a comedy. It has to be a film that addresses society. It has to be a film that dealt about very serious things but the way that its shot has to be a cult film. It is very difficult for comedies to become cult films.

Tell us about your upcoming films.

There is a film coming called ‘Hum Tum Shabana’. It's also comedy directed by Mr. Sagar Ballary. There is another film called ‘Joker’ and then there is ‘Zilla Ghaziabad’. ‘Hum Tum Shabana’ will release in September and the other two will release next year.

Tell us about your experience at Cannes film Festival. How was it?

It was beautiful and I think in the West they have really got the red carpet thing packed and they know how to do it beautifully out there. So to experience the original place of Cannes, which is the largest festival in the world, was great. But having said that I would like to add that we in India also do the red carpet premieres very well. The only difference is that our journalists don't wear tuxedos behind the line which is the uniform there.

Personally what genre of films you like?

I love dramas and thrillers.

And what about directors? Who are your favourite directors?

Michael Bay is one of my favourite directors. Tony Scott is another director I absolutely love and Steven Soderbergh too.

Which are the directors in India with whom you would like to work?

I would love to work with a lot of newcomers. I will like to work with Dibakar Banerjee and Rajkumar (Gupta).

Is it true that you really wanted to be a journalist?

Ya that is very true. In fact I wanted to be a war journalist. I wanted to go off to places like Bosnia and Chechnya and Israel. Acting is something that was not planned. It really happened like an accident. But my parents are more than happy that film happened so I wouldn't go to some corner and be bombed out.

So what do you feel about coming to Kolkata?

I love Kolkata. I love coming back here. I love the place, the people, the food and also the architecture. I love the old world feel of the city. I also love the Bengali language as it's very sweet.

So any plans of being in a Bengali film?

First it would take me five years to learn the language. But yes maybe someday. Though I have watched Bengali films of Rituparno Ghosh.

London, July 30 : Lady Gaga has launched a new line of baby wear based on some of her most shocking costumes, and it includes the controversial meat dress she wore at last year's MTV Music Awards.

The 25-year-old star's weird range includes the 35-pound meat dress, which is now on display at the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio.

Next on her fashion line is a dress made out of Muppet Show character Kermit the Frog, and the bubble dress worn throughout her Fame Ball tour in 2009 is also seen on one of the babies.

Last but not the least is a green sparkly leotard, which she wore while performing with Elton John at the Grammy Awards last year.

Shocked by her fashion choices Jimmy Kimmel asked her how she came up with the ideas for her costumes.

"When you're bed... it's pretty simple what guys want isn't it? Sometimes you put some thought into it, sometimes you put no thought," the Daily Mail quoted her as saying.

Anne Hathaway says Jake Gyllenhaal is 'nice guy' to work with

Washington, July 30 : Anne Hathaway has revealed that she loves to work with Jake Gyllenhaal because he is such a nice guy who remains unaffected by fame.
Anne Hathaway, jake gyllenhaal
Hathaway, 28, has starred with the heartthrob actor in two movies and insists he is always a pleasure to work with, as he hasn't let his fame and sex symbol status make him arrogant.

"I know actors always say this about each other but he really is lovely," Contactmusic quoted her as saying.

"I worked with him on 'Brokeback Mountain' and then five years later on 'Love and Other Drugs'; he was a great guy then and still is. He's a real person.

"That's a weird compliment, but someone's as good looking as he is, with as much adoration from such a young age, they could easily be a nightmare, or stuck-up jerk. But he's a good guy," she added.

Emma Watson 'incredibly flattered' to be new face of Lancome

Washington, July 30 : Emman Watson has revealed that she is “incredibly flattered” to have been asked to be the new face of Lancome, as it has so much history and class.
Emma Watson, lancome
Watson, 21, was named as the ambassadress for the cosmetics firm earlier this year, and she says it’s a dream come true.

“I was incredibly flattered to be asked to be the ambassadress. I think Lancome has so much class and style and history,” Contactmusic quoted her as saying.

The ‘Harry Potter’ star shot a new campaign for Lancome in March.

“I hope it brings a sense of optimism and fun and a sense of youthful energy life is just kind of like magical and full of surprise,” she said of the campaign.

The actress was chosen to become the new face of Lancome because she brings a “fresh spirit” to the brand.

Salman aims to outdo all Khans by dancing

By Subhash K Jha,Mumbai, July 30 : With his newly acquired confidence as a box office champ, Salman Khan is now working on proving himself as the best dancer among all the Khans.

Salman Khan, bodyguard,dance

This was his brief to his current favourite choreographer Mudassar Khan, when they started shooting the track "Desi beat" for his upcoming "Bodyguard".

"Salman is hell-bent on proving he's the best dancer among the Khans. When 'Desi beat' was being planned, Salman very clearly told Mudassar that he wants to be the best dancer among all the Khans. Salman shot the song like crazy," a source says.

As if getting his favourite choreographer was not enough, Salman also got on board a song director to shoot the number.

The concept of a song director joining the choreographer for a star is still novel in Bollywood. Sanjay Leela Bhansali served as a song director in Vidhu Vinod Chopra's "1942: A Love Story" even as Farah Khan was the choreographer.

And now Salman, we hear from reliable sources, wants to patent this collaborative style of shooting a song.

"Salman will work simultaneously with a choreographer of his choice and a dance director in all his major song and dance numbers," says the source.

When asked about the "Bodyguard" number, producer Atul Agnihotri confirmed: "We got Mudassar and also a song director, Sumit Dutt. The number rocks."

The collaboration that started with "Dabangg" where Salman gave Mudassar the chance to choreograph the song "Humka peeni hai", has now reached a stage where Salman insists on bringing his blue-eyed choreographer in all his films as a lucky mascot. Looks like, Salman has found his own version of what Saroj Khan used to be for Madhuri Dixit.

For the "Bodyguard number", the source adds: "Mudassar was told to take Salman out of his comfort zone as a dancer. Salman has never done this before. This is the first time Salman has followed a choreographer's instruction to the minutest detail."

'Cowboys and Aliens' an adrenaline rush

By Satyen K. Bordoloi ,Film: "Cowboys and Aliens"; Director: Jon Favreau; Actors: Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford and Olivia Wilde; Rating: ***
Cowboys and Aliens, Daniel Craig, olivia wilde, harrison ford

There isn't much to say about a film where before the protagonist even utters his first word, he has killed three strong men. Such a film becomes a wish-fulfillment for action and adrenaline junkies. Though "Cowboys and Aliens" fulfils that promise in the first half, the cliched plot progress and execution mars the second half of the film.

Jake (Daniel Craig) wakes up in the wilderness of the "Wild Wild West" without no recollection of his past and with a strange gadget stuck to his left wrist. As he finds more about his murderous past, there are things much more brutal lurking in the night sky then men who shoot before they speak. When these rugged cowboys realise that these aliens plan to take over the world, they ready up for a fight even though their pistols are no match for superior alien weaponry.

The first-half of "Cowboys And Aliens" is indeed a thrilling ride through a landscape that has been dealt with before in countless films. But director Jon Favreu's steady pace, and the addition of a seemingly magical bracelet on the wrist of the protagonist, adds a different dimension to this familiar landscape. Here, though the name, and obviously the bracelet, foreshadows the arrival of aliens, the tension and mystery is palpable.

Sadly, once the mystery about the aliens and their purpose on Earth is revealed, the film takes a nosedive towards a land of cliches and barely manages to crash-land itself in the end. A little more attention during the writing stage would have ironed out a lot of these flaws and let the film live out its potential.

The other major problem with the film is that many things are left unexplained: like the fitting in of huge aliens in small ships, and the true identity and form of a crucial character. People in the film are happy with the simple explanation by this being that it is 'from beyond the stars'. It is as if Stephen Spielberg is vain enough to believe that before his alien films, there was no curiosity on anything that is not of this earth.

The film is based on a little known comic book of the same name that has been modified extensively to fit the silver screen, most visible of which is the change of silver to gold that the aliens are after.

Hollywood seems to be in a blind rush to acquire any story with the potential to shoot and blow massive things up and making a mess of a mixed-genre film. In this case, you have in your hand a mystery-sci-fi-action-thriller. Whether your adrenalin is pumped by it, or you're disappointed, will totally depend upon your propensity towards these genres.
